“… it has been a gathering place, an economic engine, and a source of pride. Now it will once again serve the people of Lee, not as a factory but as a home, and will welcome families, seniors, and individuals who want to live, work, and thrive here in the Berkshires."
The Lofts at Eagle Mill
“The Eagle Mill has always been more than brick and mortar ...”
“WOW! AMAZING! BEAUTIFUL!”
The Lee Chamber Says It All
After the August ribbon-cutting ceremony and public open house at The Lofts, the Lee Chamber of Commerce posted: “Those reactions weren’t just about the exposed brick, soaring ceilings, original wood and steel beams, or breathtaking views of the Housatonic River. They were about the transformation. Anyone who remembers Eagle Mill from years past couldn’t help but marvel at what it has become.”
“Speaker after speaker reflected on the extraordinary partnership that made the project possible. Support from three Massachusetts administrations, local and state elected officials, Town government (including town reps years ago), private investment, and the Lee community helped turn an ambitious vision into reality. The project succeeded because it accomplished so much more than creating housing—it preserved a historic landmark, revitalized a key property, and strengthened the community through an exceptional public-private partnership.”
Exposed wooden support beams, original masonry dating to 1808, and riverfront views set The Lofts at Eagle Mill apart from a typical apartment building. All 56 apartments in Lee's newest housing development, however, will be affordable under state guidelines. Preserving the historic structure added time and complexity; it also produced apartments with distinctive layouts and original architectural details. Some units feature lofted bedrooms, others have exposed wooden beams or high ceilings, and some overlook the Housatonic River.
